Welcome to Engebret Cafè, Oslo`s oldest Restaurant

The restaurant lies right next to Akershus festning in Kvadraturen in Oslo, and has a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant has over 240 seats, including 3 chambre sèparèe. In April we also open our restaurant outside.

Guests enter the low corner building originating from the 1700's, Oslo's oldest restaurant, where staff and guests celebrated Engebret Cafè's 150th anniversary in 2007. When it opened, the restaurant was located right opposite the old Christiania Theatre and was often visited by actors and audience.

The menu offers a selection of traditional and new items. From January to March it is high season for fresh Cod which serve traditionally with liver and roe, and during the hunting season in autumn, it always contains varieties of game. In October, for the most eager, the "lutefisk" arrives. The "Lutefisk" is a well-established tradition in Oslo during the Christmas season.

The wine list incorporates the majority of wine-producing countries. We have made our one wine in 2007, Cuveè Jubileum 150 years. Côtes du Rhône 2006, from one of the best producers of wines from the Rhône region, Les Vignerons D`Estèzargues.

Engebret also provides banquet services, designed to accommodate both small and large gatherings.

New York Times Review

For a sampling of traditional Norwegian cuisine, like medallions of reindeer in a sauce of port and raisins, head over to this quietly elegant restaurant set in a low-slung 17th-century building. If the weather is nice, grab one of the 20 or so outdoor tables, where the voices of the other patrons are softened by the sound of the bubbling fountain in the adjoining courtyard.

Frommer's Review

Regrettably, it's no longer possible to sit, eat, and drink the night away with Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Grieg, and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, former patrons of this café. A favorite since 1857, this restaurant sits directly north of Akershus Castle in two buildings that have been joined together to form this establishment. The facade of the buildings has been preserved as an architectural landmark. It has an old-fashioned atmosphere and good food, served in a former bohemian literati haunt. During lunch, a tempting selection of open-faced sandwiches is available. The evening menu is more elaborate; you might begin with a terrine of game with blackberry port-wine sauce, or Engebret's always reliable fish soup. Main dishes include a truly savory dish, red wild boar with whortleberry sauce, or else Norwegian reindeer, salmon Christiania, or Engebret's big fish pot. For dessert, try the cloudberry parfait.
